About Orchestra

Philharmonic - Wed. 3:45 - 5:50 p.m.

Advanced full symphony orchestra led by director Kayson Brown. Instrumentation includes strings, winds, brass, and percussion. Students perform the masterworks of the classical repertory as well as sacred and patriotic music. Philharmonic students should read music including all clefs and transpositions common to their instrument, be proficient in every technique common to their instrument, and display maturity required to accommodate the rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule. Students are expected to study with a private teacher, support their school ensembles, and practice daily. Students must be in 9th-12th grade to apply. Named "Best Youth Performing Ensemble" by Best of State Utah for the past 7 consecutive years, the Lyceum Philharmonic is one of the nation's premiere youth orchestras and regularly performs and records with nationally recognized guest artists.

Symphonic Strings - Wed. 3:45 - 5:45 p.m.

Led by director Denise Willey, this is our most advanced preparatory ensemble, preparing students for entrance into the Lyceum Philharmonic. Symphonic Strings students have the opportunity to collaborate with choirs and learn the masterworks of the string literature. Students should read music well with good intonation and beautiful tone, be comfortable shifting in higher positions, vibrato, be capable of playing fast passagework including in difficult key signatures, and be studying with a private teacher. This ensemble is strings only.

Chamber Ensemble - Wed. 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Led by director Amanda Riley, Chamber Ensemble students have the opportunity to audition for solo concertos, work regularly with sectional coaches, and perform with a group of peers who are equally dedicated to making music at a high level even at a young age. Students should read music well, play in tune with beautiful tone and vibrato, be comfortable playing in first through fifth positions, and be studying with a private teacher. This ensemble is strings only.

Crescendo Orchestra - Wed. 4:25 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Led by director Carolyn Lundberg, Crescendo Orchestra gives young musicians an opportunity to excel musically alongside students of like ability in a fun, non-competitive learning environment. Students combine with Prelude Strings for a portion of their instruction time so as to meet a wide range of young musicians at the threshold of their ability levels. Qualified students should read music, play in tune with good tone, be comfortable with limited shifting on their instrument, maintain rhythm with the ensemble, and be studying with a private teacher. This ensemble is strings only.

Prelude Strings - Wed. 4:00 p.m. - 4:55 p.m.

String ensemble for talented youngsters led by Carolyn Lundberg. Students should be studying with a private teacher, read simple music, and have at least one year of playing experience. Students under the age of 8 or with limited music reading experience are strongly encouraged to have a parent attend rehearsals and practice with them.
